Mold Gold Cape
The Mold Gold Cape is a ceremonial artifact from the Bronze Age, dated to around 1900–1600 BCE, discovered in a burial mound near Mold, Wales in 1833. Made from a single sheet of hammered gold, the cape is intricately decorated with repoussé patterns of concentric circles, ridges, and bosses, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship and artistic sophistication for its time. Shaped to tightly fit over the shoulders and upper arms, the cape was likely worn by a high-ranking individual during ritual ceremonies, signaling status, power, or religious significance within their community. Its rigid design suggests it was not intended for everyday use but rather for symbolic display. The Mold Gold Cape remains one of the most significant examples of prehistoric European goldworking and offers a rare glimpse into the spiritual and social hierarchy of Bronze Age Britain.
