Tibetan Dung-Dkar
Sacred objects are often ornate and highly decorated, but their true religious significance is often lost on the unknowing spectator. The Tibetan Dung-Dkar is no stranger to this. On the surface it is simply a decorated conch shell, the Dung-Dkar was functionally a trumpet played by Buddhist monks to summon others into prayer or monastic ceremonies. Thanks to the conch’s natural association with the ocean, it was believed that playing this instrument could bolster prayer for rain, or protect the monks from other water related disasters.\n\nThe creators of this Dung-Dkar adorned a white conch shell with a silver mouthpiece and turquoise stones. Historically, monks would carve images of animals or people into both the shell and the silver fittings, depicting religious scenes or figures important to Buddhism.
