Golden Lyre of Ur
The Golden Lyre of Ur, also called the Bull’s Lyre, is one of the oldest surviving string instruments to date, originating from the Early Dynastic III Period of Mesopotamia (2550 BC to 2450 BC). It belongs to a set of four lyres discovered in the Royal Cemetery at Ur, located in modern day Iraq. These Lyres of Ur were discovered by Leonard Woolley in 1929, who exhumed them in fragmented pieces. He and his team was able to preserve the pieces by pouring a plaster mold of each lyre and collecting the more durable metal pieces that adorned each instrument. The metallic components were placed back on the plaster lyres for display after molds fully hardened. As of 2025, The four lyres remain split between the museums that participated in the excavation, with the Golden Lyre residing in the Iraq Museum in Baghdad.
