Clem Sohm's Wingsuit
Clem Sohn of Fowler was the first person to jump from a plane, glide through the sky, and land safely on the ground, all with a wingsuit of his own creation. This suit, modeled after a flying squirrel, was made of tubular steel, with collapsible bat-like wings and a strip of cloth between his legs that acts like the tail of a bird, enhancing both balance and control. This allows the wearer to delay pulling the ripcord until they are 1,000 feet from the ground, while the regulation height to deploy a normal parachute is 5,000 feet above the ground. The marvel of aviation that started it all led to a long span of innovations, all the way up to the modern day where the use of the Squirrel Wingsuit that many flyers use today. The United States Parachute Association recommends a person have successfully completed 200 jumps with a parachute before they can undertake a jump with any Wingsuit.
