Gunpowder was one of the most instrumental innovations in existence, changing the dynamics of warfare forever. While the actual powder was created in 9th century China, it wasn’t used for combat until around the 12th century, when Song Dynasty’s military implemented weapons such as metal bombards, fire lances, and explosives. The Heilongjiang hand cannon was then developed by iterating upon the design of the fire lance. This hand-gun was made from bronze and weighed 3.55 kilograms, with a length of 34 centimeters. This size allowed soldiers to carry these weapons on their person during long travels, allowing for quick defense in case of an ambush.\n\nModern archeologists discovered theses weapons along with many other bronze artifacts dated back to the Jurchen Jin dynasty (1115–1234), predating all previously discovered firearms.
