Babylonian Map of the World
Navigation was an incredibly important skill in developing societies, and was aided by a basic knowledge of the scale of the world. In ancient Mesopotamia, the earliest known map of the known world was drawn onto a clay tablet. The city of Babylon is shown as a large rectangle, and the Euphrates river cuts vertically through the map. An inscription reading “where Shamash [the sun] is not seen.” is located in the northeastern region, possibly referring to the ancient civilization’s tracking of the sun’s movement over the course of a day. \n\nThis map was acquired by the British Museum in 1882, translated in 1889, and remains there as of 2025.
