The ancient Babylonians recorded their leader’s most historic and impressive deeds on clay cylinders. Cyrus the Great personally recorded his many noble feats as King of Babylon, as well as some of the notable failures of his predecessor King Nabonidus on one such cylinder, known today as the Cyrus Cylinder. Included in these records is the conquest of Babylon in 539 BC, the restoration of various temples to Babylonian gods (particularly Marduk, the city-god of Babylon), and promotion of his just reign to all people. He is noted as restoring places of worship, which hosted various belief systems that King Nabonidus tried desperately to snuff out. While the cylinder is filled with many incredible deeds, the text is damaged. There is a large crack running through the center, causing a large section of the impressive history of Cyrus the Great to be lost in time.
