Scientists and historians are unsure of the exact date humanity discovered that magnets could be used for navigational purposes. However, they have narrowed it down to sometime during the Han dynasty between 300 BC and 200 BC with the discovery of the South Governor Compass. This device, also known as the Sīnán Compass, was made of a naturally magnetized material called Lodestone, and was carved into a large, spoon-like shape. For most efficient use, the bowl of the spoon was placed on a “heaven plate” notating the cardinal and ordinal directions, but any flat surface that was polished and smooth enough to allow the object to rotate could be used if needed. While the citizens of Ancient China did used these compasses for spiritual purposes such as divination, this device was most often used for finding rare materials and discerning quality locations for housing developments.
