Analytical Engine
Modern computers permeate everyday life, but the very first concept of what we recognize as a computer today was the Analytical Engine. Designed by Charles Babbage in 1837, this machine was designed and conceptualized, but never fully built. It was comprised of four basic parts: the mill to do calculations, the store to hold data temporarily, the reader that acted as the input for information, and the printer that would output information. This inspired their modern day equivalent: the Central Processing Unit, the memory and storage, keyboards and mice, and screens respectively. Babbage’s colleague, Ada Lovelace, was the first person to write code for this machine, and though it was theoretical at the time, modern emulators are able to show us exactly how the engine would work using her scripts.
