When he was a small boy, Erik Thorvaldsson's family had to leave Norway after his father was banished for manslaughter. Erik grew up in Iceland, where he built a farm and started his own family. Like his father, Erik was also exiled for manslaughter, but this time from Iceland, after a dispute with a neighboring farm.\n\nIt was during his exile that Erik went exploring and found Greenland. While not the first to discover Greenland, or the first to try to settle it, Erik was the first European to permanently settle it. He purposefully chose the name in order to entice settlers from Iceland, and it worked. Unfortunately a small ice age a few hundred years later spelled the end of the settlement.
