Celebrated as a national hero in Korea for his victories in the Imjin War, Yi Sun-sin managed to best Japan on the seas while facing nearly impossible odds. He went from never having commanded a naval battle to someone that the Japanese feared in a very short time. He instilled intense loyalty in his men through a combination of charisma, shows of respect, and even going so far as personally fulfilling their dying wishes.\n\nYi is also noted for his improvement upon the design of the Korean turtle ship. While the Koreans preferred using cannons and guns in naval warfare, the Japanese were highly skilled at hand-to-hand combat. The turtle ship's enclosed design (and spikes) prevented boarding from the Japanese, and also worked well in the tight spaces around islands in conjunction with their cannons.
